Architecture Books – Week 11/2023

archidose.substack.com

This week on A Weekly Dose of Architecture Books:

I’m musing about “Architectural Exhibitions and Their Books” in the context of three books:

  • Futures of the Architectural Exhibition: Mario Ballesteros, Giovanna Borasi, Ann Lui, Ana Miljacki, Zoë Ryan, Martino Stierli, Shirley Surya in Conversation with Students edited by Reto Geiser and Michael Kubo, published by Park Books, 2023

  • Another Breach in the Wall: The City as a Common Good by Davide Tommaso Ferrando and Daniel Tudor Munteanu, published by Solitude Project, 2022

  • Lacaton & Vassal: Espacio libre, transformación, habiter / Free space, transformation, habiter published by Fundación ICO / Puente Editores, 2021

Architecture Book News:

  • A. Eugene (Gene) Kohn — the "K" in KPF — died last week at the age of 92. His autobiography, The World by Design: The Story of a Global Architecture Firm, was featured on my blog three years ago.

  • Madame Architect has a review of Denise Scott Brown In Other Eyes: Portraits of an Architect, edited by Frida Grahn, published by Birkhäuser in its Bauwelt Fundamente series.

  • The New York Times — late to the party, it appears — has an article on the white gloves myth: “When handling rare books, experts say that bare, just-cleaned hands are best.” I find it funny when new books use white gloves in promotional photos to make the books appear more special, as in Dig It!:

A stretch of the Grand Canal in Venice would be dramatically different if Raimund Abraham's conceptual designs for Ca' Venier dei Leoni (Peggy Guggenheim Collection) and Ponte dell'Accademia were actually realized. They were designed for the 3rd Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Aldo Rossi in 1985, and spotted in the second volume of the exhibition's two-part catalog.
